Some Oral History

David Manning in Galic is spelled Daibhi O'Manion or O'Mannin Daibhi is pronounced Daybee.
According to the Manning family oral history, given by our cousin Denis Manning from Ballyferriter, County Kerry, Ireland, all Mannings come from the Ballyferriter area, because your forbearer named O'Mannin was chased out of the Galway area by the English. A rope, probably had something to do with the chasing out of Galway. Grammy came from near Ennis in County Clare.
Manning is the 362nd most common name in the United States.
Ballyferriter is a beautiful area where the movie "Far and Away" with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman was filmed. There is "Slighehead" and "Dingle Bay", plus the westernmost part of Ireland to lookover. When Lindberg flew the Atlantic the first time, Ballyferriter was his crossing point into Europe. Our cousin said it was the very first time they had ever seen an airplane.
When Mom and I visited there in 1978 to find the long lost family, we first went into a pub and asked anyone. if they knew a Manning. We were told to go next door to a cousin, the person there said your cousinis in London, but your real cousin, lives down where the road splits. Knocking on a door there a woman of about 80 years answered and said "Yes she was a cousin, but your real cousin lives next door". Now all of this is swiftly passing over my head, as I did not stop to think "How to they know who MY cousin's are"? The woman remarked your Grandmother was here, a nice woman, but a little chubby. My grandmother Sara stopped there in 1927 on here visit home, that was 51 years earlier. The inhabitants have nothing to do, but repeat family stories over and over until everyone knows everyone else's family history.
My grandfather Joseph (N.M.I.) no middle initial emigrated to the US in 1894 along with his three brothers. Grampy was said to have made the front page of the Boston Post his first day in the US, when he went to the Custom House to apply for his citizenship. When asked how long he had been in the country, he replied 10 minutes. The reporter thought that funny as you needed to be here 7 years. Grampy eventually settled in Quincy and worked at a quarry as a stone mason and became a master stone cutter. I still have a hand forged stone chisel that Grampy and dad made, when dad was a child, in the backyard of 33 Antwerp St. Grampy became the manager at the Milton Cemetery as he had what was then considered a college education, even though the British had made it was illegal to educate the Irish. His Uncle was the schoolteacher. Grampy cut the name stones for the Pilgrims Monument in Provencetown. If you walk up the stairs the last name near the top of the stairs is Milton. If you touch this stone you will be connectingwith your great grandfather or great great grandfather.
The Manning's were quite well educated and legend has it that the family translated the English version of the Bible into Gaelic. Grampy found and married Sarah and moved to Milton where they had 8 children. Daddy the 2nd born, was born at 103 Squantum St. the other half of 101 Squantum St. where we lived from 1960 to 1963. Grampy bought 51 Denmark Ave. were I lived until I was 10, I then moved to 15 Denmark Ave., another house that Grampy had bought. Grampy wanted to buy 33 Antwerp St., and when Grammy was talking to her best friend that owned it, was told that another person was going to put a down payment on the house that day. The friend told Grammy if she could put a down payment right then her husband would have to sell the house to them and not the other buyer. Grammy only had one nickel on her person and her friend accepted the nickel as a down payment and Grampy was able to buy the house. You may notice that I used Grampy as buying the house as up until the early 1900's women were not allowed to own property or enter into any contract. A woman was owned by her father, then her husband, and if her husband died, she was owned by her eldest son. You may notice that the father "gives away" the daughter at her wedding.
